Home Care in Aurora – January is National Hot Tea Month
The Tea Association of Canada is promoting the health benefits of drinking tea, and trying to educate Canadians about the flavonoid antioxidant content in these healthy hot drinks, which were at one time mistakenly claimed to be dehydrating. In reality the caffeine content in tea does not produce significant dehydrating effects. Quite the contrary, as water makes up 99% of tea, and is counted towards your daily quota needs of water.
Some of the highlights about the relationship between tea and health found at http://www.tea.ca/tea-health/tea-for-your-health-newsletter/tea-for-your-health-may-2014/ are as follows:
“Tea and Health Research
Every day, new medical evidence from the international scientific community lends credibility to tea’s healthy properties. Not only does tea taste delicious and is easy to make, it’s also good for healthier hearts, sharper minds and smaller waistlines. Below are some highlights of the latest scientific research presented at the Fifth International Scientific Symposium on Tea & Human Health in 2012 and published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in December 2013”
- “Only 1 cup of black tea per day may improve blood vessel function, lower blood pressure and reduce the incidence of stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases by 10%.”
- “Drinking green tea along with a weight bearing exercise like Tai Chi are an effective way to improve muscle strength, reduce inflammation and improve low bone mass, which may help to reduce the risk for osteoporosis and fractures, especially among older Americans.”
- “Just one cup of tea may boost one’s ability to solve difficult language/mathematical problems.”
- “Tea has anti-cancer properties: Men who drank more than 1.5 cups of green tea per day had a 70% lower colon cancer risk.”
Tea Flavonoids (Polyphenols)
Flavonoids are the largest of the polyphenolic compound groups. Thus, those two scientific terms are almost used interchangeably. These are compounds with antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory properties, disease-fighting and immune-boosting.
Did you know tea is the second most consumed drink in the world, taking second place only to water?
Did you know approximately 33% of the weight of tea leaves is flavonoids?
Did you know tea has been shown to ward off vascular damage which is linked to heart disease and other chronic health conditions?
