Does You Parents Suffer with Dry Heels?

Home Care Tips for Proper Foot Care in Thornhill

Your elderly loved one’s heels might get quite dry and cracked. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on this and not let them get too bad before you do something about it. Infections can enter into the cracks and cause problems. Keeping the heels exfoliated and moist and soft is the best solution.Does You Parents Suffer with Dry Heels?

Here are some tips for taking care of heels:

  1. Make sure shoes and boots fit properly. If they are too small, there can be circulation problems. If they are too big, friction resulting from the foot moving around in the boot can cause calluses and ridges on the heels. Toes need to have ample wiggle room.
  2. Feet should be washed daily with warm water and a little soap. Hot water shouldn’t be used because it can rob the skin of its natural oils. Hot water is harmful for diabetics who already have impaired circulation.
  3. Feet and heels should be gently exfoliated while washing. A cloth or pumice stone can be used. Don’t use abrasive tools or metal files on tender senior skin.
  4. Dry feet well and remember to dry between the toes as well. When drying, you can gently rub the heels with the towel and you may see more dead skin peeling off.
  5. Moisturize the feet and especially the heel. Special heel creams contain urea which is vital for foot care. Skin naturally contains urea and it helps to hold in moisture. The moisturizer doesn’t need to be applied between toes.
  6. Cotton socks are recommended for good air circulation. Foot soaks can be done occasionally as long as the temperature of the water is only warm. A little vinegar in the water will help to soften and exfoliate thick dried skin on heels.
  7. Sometimes you might want to consider an overnight treatment for your elderly loved one’s feet. Massage some olive oil into their feet and put on cotton socks. The next morning wash and exfoliate their feet, followed by a moisturizer.
  8. Try to avoid using over the counter treatments that claim to be callus softeners as these usually contain skin-irritating ingredients.

Foot care is one of the first personal care tasks that elderly loved ones neglect because they simply can’t reach their feet anymore or they spend too much time trying to get other necessary things done such as showering and getting dressed.

Personal and home care tasks that are becoming difficult for your loved one to do on their own can be performed by an in-home care service. You may not always have time to take care of all the needs of your elderly mom or dad, yet you don’t want them to be struggling on their own. To give you peace of mind and get your parents the help they really need, call the agency to find out more about home care services.

Home Care can help your loved one with their personal care needs, as well as other tasks such as fixing meals, laundry , cleaning and taking your loved one to his or her doctor appointments.
