If you are caring for a loved one who may have caused you harm in the past, letting go and forgiveness may be hard to come by. Perhaps you hadn’t had a close relationship with a parent for years and one day you got a phone call saying they were ill and needed care. You may not have wanted to help, especially if you feel like this parent didn’t’ care for you as a child. This can be a difficult situation filled with resentment and hurt. If you are having a hard time finding forgiveness for a loved one you are now caring for, here are a few ideas on how to get the compassion flowing.

  1. If your parents weren’t nurturing when you were a child or if you feel like they could have done a better job caring for you, keep in mind they might have had a difficult upbringing. Most people learn from example and your parents are no different. They probably did the best they could with what they learned from their parents. This doesn’t mean neglect or abuse is okay, it just means nobody is perfect.
  2. Try to have a positive attitude. The past isn’t going to just go away but you can choose to have a more positive attitude today. You control your own happiness, try not to let people or events dictate how you feel.
  3. Your parents may not have changed much but choose to change the family dynamic. You may not ever be as close as you would like but try your best to start a new relationship with the people you both are today.
  4. If you aren’t able to care for your parent because of past or present hurt, find someone to help. This is nothing to feel guilty or ashamed about. You need to do what’s in your best interest. Research local home care agencies and find someone you know will take good care of your loved one.
