How Older Adults Can Manage Their Chronic Pain

If the headache occurs in the forehead or temples, it may be a tension headache. Applying menthol cream to the forehead or base of the neck may be able to help. Pain medications may also provide some relief from the senior’s headaches, especially those that contain caffeine, aspirin, or acetaminophen. However, do not take it for more than 3 days without consulting a doctor.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Another common cause of pain among older adults is osteoarthritis. This condition occurs when the protective cartilage between the joints begins to break down, resulting in chronic pain in the hips, knees, and hands. OA is most commonly found in adults over the age of 60.

The best way to ease the pain of OA is to stay physically active. By exercising regularly, the blood will continue to circulate, which will reduce the pain in the joints and muscles around the joints. The elder’s doctor may be able to prescribe medication to help the elder with their pain as well.

These are just a few conditions that could be causing your loved one’s pain. Talk to the elder’s doctor if their pain persists.
