Bedsores can be incredibly painful, especially if an individual is bedridden for a significant amount of time. For an aging individual, especially one who has recently suffered from a major health emergency, slip and fall accident, or surgery and are spending most of the time in bed, getting exercise is incredibly important, but so too is dealing with bedsores.

Experienced home care services can provide a number of support systems for aging individuals who are relegated to their bed or a single position for many hours of the day. There are four basic stages of bedsores:

Stage 1:  A red area appears on the skin and is painful and itchy.

Stage 2:   The skin has been compromised. An open sore could look similar to a blister or an abrasion.

Stage 3:  The bedsore has become incredibly painful and difficult to treat. The pressure ulcer has gone through the layers of the skin all the way down to the muscle. This indicates a permanently destroyed tissue that may require medical attention.

Stage 4:  Bedsores are considered the most serious and advanced and can destroy muscle, bone, and even damage tendons and joints. Bedsores in this stage can also be lethal.

Below are several ways that an in-home care provider can help alleviate the risk of bedsores and even treat stage I and stage II bedsores.

Reposition the body. It’s advisable to reposition the individual at least every two hours that they remain in bed. If they are in a wheelchair, it’s important to reposition them at least every 30 minutes.

Special beds. Relying on special beds, mattresses, and pillows can also help to alleviate pressure at certain parts of the body.

Avoid lying on hip bones. If the senior is lying on his or her side, that portion of skin that is directly over the hip bone will be at greatest risk of getting a bedsore. Add a foam pad or pillow underneath the hip to help alleviate some of the pressure.

Avoid raising the head more than 30°. Every time an individual’s body is lifted by a few degrees, it’s placing increased pressure on certain pressure points in their pelvic region. Try to avoid raising the head by more than 30° to help avoid placing that extra pressure on the body.

Paying attention to these strategies can help alleviate bedsores or even prevent them from occurring. Experienced home care services can provide around-the-clock care for any senior who is considered bedridden or relegated to a wheelchair.
