Post Operative Nursing Care in Ontario
Post-operative nursing care from Staff Relief ensures that your loved one receives the individualized care they need post-surgery. Our caregivers range levels of care from personal support workers to high-level nursing expertise in patient safety, so we can be sure to meet any and all patient care in the critical postoperative period.
We give peace of mind during the immediate postoperative phase while they recover in their own home, surrounded by family and familiar settings. Specializing in post-operative services, our staff offers a level of understanding and comfort not found in a facility setting.
WHAT IS POST-SURGERY CARE?
Post-surgery care is essential for a speedy recovery. This post-operative nursing care usually involves monitoring the patient’s vital signs, administering medications, providing wound care and helping the patient to be comfortable. Additionally, post-surgery care can also involve helping the patient with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming and dressing.
This specific recovery care can be given in hospital, rehab facility or after you have been discharged and returned home. This care plan depends on individual medical history and is created with instructions from your previous medical team to continue the healing process and help avoid post-operative complications. This can include wound care, pain management, monitoring vital signs, help to administer medications and overall day-to-day-support at home.
Your doctor should give you comprehensive instructions before you’re discharged regarding what to expect during the immediate postoperative period. It is also important to ask questions, or to have someone ask questions on your behalf if necessary. Useful questions to ask include:
What medications or other supplies will I need when I go home?
Will I need the support of a caregiver or physiotherapist at home?
How can I aid my recovery? Are there things I should do or avoid?
How long will it take for me to be fully recovered?
It may be difficult to understand the extent of the last question but your doctor may give a more realistic estimated timeline for recovery. Everyone is unique with their postoperative journey.

POST-OPERATIVE NURSING CARE AT HOME
Many times postoperative care can be carried out at home for some minor procedures that don’t require a hospital stay, which is also known as outpatient surgery or day case.
For critically ill patients who have undergone inpatient surgery, the course of post-operative care varies according to the patient’s readiness. In these cases, the recovery starts as an inpatient, in order to carefully monitor important vital signs, including systolic blood pressure, temperature and more, in a postanesthesia care unit in order to prevent respiratory complications and other potential obstacles to recovery.
Staff Relief if available to support you in either situation in hospital or at home post-operative care. Our caregivers will be able to fully assess upon discharge any changes to your care plan and follow hospital recommendations to optimize your recovery process.
